MOTD Code in /tellraw and /title Command

en 1.8+ /Every Command instructions You can actually use MOTD Code in the /tellraw and /title command and others. But we are only going to be focusing on the /tellraw and the /title command for now.

The command

Note: Minify the command to avoid issues :)

Every MOTD Code starts with \u then 4 numbers after that which are in hexadecimal numbers. The numbers we always use are decimal numbers which are numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Hexadecimal numbers are numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, a, b, c, d, e, and f. You can use MOTD Code from \u0000 - \uFFFF which is a total of 65,535 different characters! The colored MOTD Code starts at \u00A70 - \u00A7f, \u00A7k - \u00A7o, and \u00A7r. \u00A70 - \u00A7f are colors (in order): Black, Dark Blue, Dark Green, Dark Aqua, Dark Red, Dark Purple, Gold, Gray, Dark Gray, Blue, Green, Aqua, Red, Light Purple, Yellow, and White. \u00A7k - \u00A7o are (in order): Obfuscated (random characters- it may lag for some people), Bold, Strikethrough, Underlined, and Italic. Lastly, \u00A7r is reset; reset is not always white though; for chat and command block is white and for signs is black. Reset is basically back to the default color. Other information about formatting code is found in the Gamepedia website.

Here is an example of using the MOTD Code in the /tellraw.

/tellraw @a {"text": "\u00A75Hi"}

This command displays, "Hi" in dark purple. Here is the command you would type normally without MOTD Code:

/tellraw @a {"text": "Hi", "color": "dark_purple"}

It is longer but more stable than the MOTD Code when it comes to going into another line in the chat. Everybody has different chat sizes. Some may have shorter chat sizes than others so the message would go into another line. In the normal way of using the /tellraw command, this wouldn't be a problem. However, in the MOTD Code, the whole color effects and formatting (obfuscated, bold, underlined, strikethrough, and reset) would reset in the next line:

/tellraw @a {"text": "\u00A75This is a test for using a very long message in the chat. This is another message that may get displayed in the next line causing it to reset the color and formatting.\u00A7r"}

You could solve that by this command but it's not the best method:

It is very long and unnecessary. So we would go to the basic way of using color and formatting so all the players could see the message correctly. I would recommend using MOTD Code in the title command and in the item lore (descriptions) and other hover text since most people can see them and you know when the next line happens, but that would be on another tutorial.

You would instead type the command like this:

/tellraw @a {"text": "This is a test for using a very long message in the chat. This is another message that may get displayed in the next line causing it to reset the color and formatting.", "color": "dark_purple"}

This is a lot simpler and less work to do.

Also using MOTD Code doesn't work when you're typing a selector:

/tellraw @a {"text": "\u00A75Hi ", "extra": [{"selector": "\u00A7e@p"}, {"text": "\u00A75!\u00A7r"}]}

The message will display instead, "Hi !" The name of the player got cut out because of an error. To solve that, type this instead:

/tellraw @a {"text": "\u00A75Hi ", "extra": [{"selector": "@p", "color": "yellow"}, {"text": "\u00A75!\u00A7r"}]}

So using MOTD Code is very helpful when shortening small messages but big messages. But it is very helpful on other things that will be discussed on another tutorial.

The /title command is very similar to the /tellraw command for MOTD Code but you don't need to worry about cutting out in another line, so using MOTD Code is ok here except for the selector again like the /tellraw command.

/title @a title {"text": "\u00A75Hi ", "extra": [{"selector": "@p", "color": "yellow"}, {"text": "\u00A75!\u00A7r"}]}

The MOTD Code for numbers would be from \u0030 - \u0039, capital letters would be from \u0041 - \u005A, lowercased letters would be from \u0061 - \u007A. Spaces are \u0020, quotation marks are \u0022, backslashes are \u005c, and null (nothing) is \u0000. Other information can be found by googling ascii table for the rest of the basic symbols. You should look for Hex numbers for the MOTD Code.

An example of typing a MOTD Code fully tellraw command would look something like this:

/tellraw @a {"text": "\u0022\u0048\u0069\u0022\u002E\u0020\u0054\u0068\u0069\u0073\u0020\u0069\u0073\u0020\u0061\u0020\u0074\u0065\u0073\u0074\u002E"}

It displays: "Hi". This is a test.
