Bunk beds can add drama and adventure to a child's space. Ms. Keenan adds a shelf to hold books or a reading lamp in each sleeping nook to make bunk beds more appealing to children.
Many of our bunk beds for kids can be converted into two twin beds. This is a great option when you plan to move them to their own bedroom at some point. Choose from finishes such as brushed gray, cream white, and rich walnut.
Ladders and Stairs
You can pick between stairs and ladders when it comes to bunk beds for children. Ladders can be installed easily and are cheaper. They also offer an easy way to get into the top bunk bed. They are also considered to be safer than staircases, as they have a bigger surface for children to step on and have a built-in handrail. Ladders also usually have grooves in the steps which help prevent slippage when climbing up or down the bed.
If you prefer the design and appearance of stairs, then they can make a more elegant addition for your bunk bed. Staircases are also ideal for rooms that are tight on space since they don't extend into the space like ladders do. They can be constructed of wood or metal, and they can match the wide variety of bedroom designs.
small bunk bed for kids have integrated storage drawers. They are a great way to add more space to the bunk bed.
When deciding between a staircase and a ladder it is important to consider the age of your child. It is recommended that children younger than 6 years old should not be sleeping on the top bunk. Older children who can climb vertically could be better off with stairs than using a ladder. If you intend to use your bunk bed for guests, like older children or adults with limited mobility, it is recommended to use stairs.
A straight staircase that runs along the sides of the bunk requires a minimum of 95" of space on each side. If you do not have enough space, you can opt for an u-shaped staircase that does not require as much room but still allows you to get access to the top bunk in a safe and securely. Certain beds let you disconnect the stairs when they're not being used. This reduces the size of the bed and makes it more versatile for multipurpose spaces. There are also staircases that connect to the bottom of the bed and eliminate the need for a separate handrail, and makes it easier for children to climb up and down.
Guard Rails
Guard rails give children the confidence and the freedom to climb into and out of bed independently. They must be placed correctly to ensure there are no gaps or loosening in between the guardrails and the frame of the bed. Follow the instructions of the manufacturer when installing guard rails and make sure to check them regularly to ensure that they aren't loose or have holes that could lead to the entrapment.
Keep bunk beds clear of electrical appliances and other items that can become projectiles while your children are playing or sleeping. Set bunk beds far from windows to avoid an injury to fall risk when your children climb up on the top level.
You may want to install an evening light on the ladder so that it can illuminate the ladder's climb and descent if your child wakes at the end of the night to use the bathroom, or are woken by a storm to leave their room.
Another excellent safety feature for bunks is a safety net which can be installed on the top level to stop children from falling down while asleep or playing. This is a great idea for older children, who may be more likely to sleep on the top bunk.
Guardrails should be secured to the bunk bed's structure and must not be removable without the use of tools. The openings in the guardrail above the mattress base should not be larger than 3.5 inches wide to avoid strangulation or entrapment. Place the wedge block shown in Figure 1 in each of the openings in the topmost guardrail member, and above the mattress foundation. Then apply 33-lbf (147-N) force in a direction that is perpendicular to the plane of the larger end of the block, and maintain it for a period of 1 minute.
It's also an excellent idea to instruct kids not to hang things on the ladders or guardrails for example, such as clothing, belts and sports equipment; instead a rack for clothes is recommended to ensure that these items aren't a strangulation risk for your child(ren). Make sure that no more than one child is sleeping on the top bunk. This could lead to a risky imbalance and even falls.
Mattresses
Be aware of the age of your child and their size when selecting a mattress for a bunk beds. A bunk mattress should last for at least eight years or until siblings do not share bedrooms So, you'll want to choose a mattress that is designed to grow with your child while still providing adequate support as they grow older.
There are a variety of bunk mattress sizes. They are typically twin or full size. If your child is suffering from asthma or allergies, opt for an hypoallergenic mattress with a dust-mite barrier as well as a moisture-wicking cover. Mattresses that have an antimicrobial coating will protect the foam against harmful bacteria and germs.
The comfort of your mattress is important. Children are typically heavier than adults and require a mattress which is firm but also comfortable. Many latex and hybrid mattresses have a firm side and a softer side to meet the needs of both children.
Memory foam mattresses are good for kids, but we don't recommend them due to their tendency not to cool well and can be hard on the spines of young children. You should consider a hybrid or a latex mattress instead, which can provide strong support with cooling infusions to ensure your child or guest is resting cool and comfortable.
Low-profile mattresses are often the best choice for bunk beds for children. These are designed to be thinner than regular mattresses and maximize the height of the safety rails for the top bunk. They minimize "filler" materials to provide top quality and durability with slim designs.
If your child wants to try a mattress more substantial than a standard mattress, think about an hybrid or innerspring model with upper comfort layers that can be removed or replaced as your child develops. These models will give you a good idea of how the mattress will hold up as your child grows, and you can always include a mattress pad or bed skirt to stop it from sliding off the frame. Some beds come with a built-in lip or side rails to prevent this from happening.
Storage
Bunk beds are an excellent alternative to save space in shared children's rooms. They can also be a cost-effective alternative to purchasing two separate full sized single beds. Many bunks offer the option to add a trundle that can be put under the bottom bunk when not being used.
To maximize space and storage in a space with bunk beds, consider installing a combination kids bedroom furniture set that includes dressers, desks or bookcases. This will allow you to keep all your child's personal items, clothing and toys in one place without cramming them into overstuffed closets or chests. These kids bedroom furniture sets are available from a variety of retailers and typically meet all federal safety standards.
Stacking bunks can provide an opportunity for creativity as kids can transform the spaces below into hidden spaces for play or cozy spaces. Designer Elizabeth Georgantas stacked six bunks to create the ultimate children' space. It can be used to sleep, play or even for superhero cape twirling. The room features the bubble wallcovering of Chasing Paper and a ceiling painted in Benjamin Moore Blue Jean to create the ultimate escape.
If you're unable to construct an stairwell to your stacked bunk beds A ladder is a good alternative. The ladders are constructed with a combination of Single Socket Tee Flange, Single Socket Tee and 90 Degree Side Outlet Tee fittings. They can be easily adjusted to increase or decrease the distance between ladder rungs to make it easier for toddlers to climb. The ladder rungs are positioned directly on the ground instead of above, to make climbing easier.
Another method to maximize space in a room that has bunk beds is to put up loft beds for kids that can be lowered down to just above the floor. This lets you slide desks, dressers, or toy chests under the beds that are elevated. This is a real maximize of space and can be a great solution for smaller bedrooms, or in a large family home where beds have to be able to accommodate several sleepers.
