The X8 is still a good vacuum on bare floors, slinging debris under its side brushes and into its 400ml dust bin with relative ease. The X8's tyres, despite their circular shape, are good at grabbing edges and corners. It's not a great kitty litter scooper, however, with our tests showing it can only remove about 90% of the fur from hard floors.

There's a mopping mode that utilizes the same water tank as the vacuuming one. This is great for spills that are not serious, but you can't limit the amount of water it consumes. It does, however, do an admirable job of picking up pet hair, with a better pickup rate than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

Miele's RX2 robotic vacuum is renowned for its quiet, effective appliances. It has a beautiful design, superb navigation, and excellent cleaning power. However, it does have some operational hiccups that keep it from ranking as the top overall smart robot vacuum.

The RX2 is equipped with a dual-sensor mapping technique that uses a LIDAR to map a room and a pair of 3D scanning cameras for detecting and avoiding obstacles (such as furniture legs or pet waste). Once the room is defined it is possible to assign virtual no go areas and sections that you would like to be the robot. The RX2 is equipped with excellent sensors that can identify furniture and other obstructions immediately. One thing we love about the 980 is the fact that it utilizes its iAdapt 2.0 navigation sensors and visual simultaneous localisation and mapping technology (or vSLAM) to remember the floor plan of your home. It will use this information to create a consistent, efficient cleaning path in every cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a cleaner vacuum than the majority of high-end robot vacuums.

Other features of the 980 include dual multi-surface brushes that grab dirt from carpets and hard floors and an ejector brush that spins to sweep debris into the robotic vacuum’s bin. Its floor tracking sensor helps it navigate between furniture, along edges and on the stairs. Cliff Detect prevents the Roomba from falling. It can also return automatically to the base station to allow for charging between sessions. While the 980's battery life and bin size isn't as good as those of other robot vacuums it's a reliable and solid machine that will keep your floors clean for hours on end.
