Theme
Music is one of the most important elements of any Zelda game, and it can make a world feel huge exciting, epic, and thrilling. However, Twilight Princess is criticized for its erratic and inconsistent soundtrack that fails to capture the emotional impact of certain moments. Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and other games have stunning compositions that bloom at the perfect moment to give you a sense of grandness and eerie.
Twilight Princess was composed by Asuka Ohta and Toru Minegishi. Koji Kondo, the composer of the series' first time since Wind Waker was in charge of overseeing the composers. The soundtrack to Twilight Princess is a radical departure from the usual approach to the show, with a an approach that is minimalist to melody and arrangements. The majority of themes for dungeons and fields start with a single instrument, creating a hypnotic and mysterious atmosphere for the player. For instance, the haunting music of Midna's lament makes use of the piano to create an overwhelming sense of sorrow for the player.
The most prominent examples are dungeon themes which have a dreary atmosphere. This style is evident in the Twilight Realm theme, which features a soundscape that could be at home on a David Lynch film. The dark and unsettling quality of this track is accentuated by the absence of recognizable melody and traditional arrangement, with dreary drones and bizarre patterns interspersed to create a dark, gloomy texture.
Link's song from his hometown, "Faron Woods," is a more upbeat and joyful track. This tune uses various soft sounds and stringed instruments to create an idyllic sense of safety and peace for the player. The song has a subtle nod to the most famous scene from the franchise, because it has a melody that is reminiscent of the famous melody that plays at Ocarina of Time's beginning.
There are also some exciting songs in Twilight Princess that change depending on the location of the player in the game, what they're doing, and the events that are taking place. For example, the Hyrule Castle Town theme has different versions for each section of the town with Central Square having a more boisterous and full version of the tune. These variations add a wonderful addition to the world of Hyrule, adding a sense deepness and immersion.
