Modern electronic key fobs offer more convenience and functions compared to manual keys. Batteries will eventually get worn out and will require replacement. If your Volvo key fob has begun to fail, it's a good sign that the battery is dying and will require replacement soon.
Fortunately, there are some easy steps you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery on your own. Choose a clean surface to work on. Then, lay out all the tools you require. Then, locate the battery's hole, and open it using the flathead, a coin, or a similar tool. Then, carefully remove the battery out of its socket by lifting it up on the side closest to the key-ring loop. Use rubber gloves to protect the clips and electronic contact surfaces.
Once the battery has been removed, put the new battery into its socket. Make sure that the positive side is facing up and that it's seated in all of the clips. Slide the cover downwards towards the key-ring area until it becomes loose and is able to slide off. Then, you can remove the cover to reveal the mechanical key blade that is hidden within. This is a way to unlock your car through the driver's door if the key fob battery is dead or lost.
How to Start Your Vehicle
The majority of modern vehicles are equipped with key fobs which can do much more than unlock or lock the doors. They also have other useful functions like summoning and auto parking the vehicle. In fact, the newest Volvo XC60 can even remotely start your engine with its key fob buttons. How does it work exactly?
Find a clean surface on which you can arrange the necessary items for this project. Place the fob on the work surface with the Volvo logo facing upwards. Then utilize a flathead screwdriver, coin or similar tool to switch the battery hatch from the open position. Be careful not to touch the electronic contact surfaces of the fob using your tools, since this could cause the key fob to stop working properly.
Once the hatch is opened, place the battery in its socket. Make sure that the positive (+ side) is facing upwards. Once the clips are locked into place, remove the battery cover and then reassemble the fob.
Pressing the unlock button once will turn off the alarm and unlock the driver's side door. Pressing it again will unlock all doors as well as the tailgate. The unlock button can also be used to roll down the windows during an extremely hot day or to let in fresh air prior to getting behind the wheel. If you want more than that, the keyfob can be used to trigger the ERS, which will activate the climate control system of your vehicle. It will then warm or cool the vehicle to the desired temperature when the vehicle is parked.
