Like iRobot's latest models, the RX2 features a dual-sensor mapping system that utilizes an LIDAR sensor to map an area and two 3D scanning cameras to detect and avoid obstacles (like furniture legs or pet waste) in real-time. Once the room is mapped the app allows you to create virtual no-go zones as well as favorite sections that the robot will clean automatically. You can also initiate cleaning manually or change the cleaning mode, view a live feed from the onboard cameras and more from the main screen.

The RX2 has excellent sensors that can detect furniture and other obstructions in a flash. However, it's not the most agile robot on the market. As with many others it's not a very good climber and has trouble with things like thresholds made of steel transition strips.

This budget robovac looks just like your typical robot but it's an upgrade in performance and features. Its smart mapping system creates 3D and 2D maps of your home and uses them to navigate and stay clear of obstructions. This combination of sensors, together with a bump sensor, and an infrared sensor for dropping that keeps it off stairs, makes it one of the most flexible vacuums we've tested.

It was able to climb over carpets with thick shags and was not stuck (unlike the RoboVac 11s, or Roomba 690-). Its navigation abilities were also impressive. Its composite score for flooring and carpet beats the competition and it picked up 98.5% of pet hair that we tested in our lab samples.

The controls are more basic than those of the competitors. There's best affordable robot vacuum on the top and you can launch it via the app or by voice commands with Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also create a schedule for your daily or weekly cleans, create areas that are not allowed to be cleaned, and check its cleaning history. Its self-navigation and environmental mapping is something to behold. It also comes with more advanced automation features than its competitors, such as the ability to create virtual boundary markers through its mobile application. While its app isn't the most responsive, and the 980 does spin a bit when moving over cables, it's a highly efficient robot vacuum.

One thing we really like about the 980 is that it uses its iAdapt 2.0 navigation sensors and its visual simultaneous mapping and localisation technology (or vSLAM) to remember the floor plan of your home. It then uses that information to create an efficient and consistent cleaning path for every cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a more efficient vacuum than most competing high-end robot vacuums.


Other features of the 980 include dual multi-surface brushes that grab dirt from carpets and hard floors and an ejector brush that spins to sweep debris into the robotic vacuum’s bin. Its floor tracking sensors aid it navigate between furniture and around edges, while Cliff Detect keeps the Roomba from slipping down stairs. And it automatically returns to its base station for hassle-free recharging between sessions. The bin capacity and the battery life of the 980 aren't as good as some other robot vacuums. However, it is an extremely reliable and sturdy machine that will keep floors clean for a long time. hours.
