To configure this bot, you need to plug it into its base and connect it to your home Wi-Fi network. The Neato app will guide you through the initial setup (linking the D4 to Wi-Fi, giving it a name, etc.). When the D4 is fully charged it's time to start a cleaning cycle.

Once you've got your D4 running it's possible to make use of the app to create an automated schedule or manually start cleaning whenever you want. The iRobot Roomba 980 is the flagship robot from the company's line-up with a promise of top performance and connected features. The 980 retails at PS899/$899 but it's typically cheaper if you shop on the internet (John Lewis or Amazon US are both good places to start).

The 980 is the most advanced of all our top picks. It comes with a HEPA-filter which can trap micronized dust and allergens, which can improve the air quality in your house. It also supports a wide variety of floor surfaces, including hardwood and tile.

One of the most prominent characteristics of the 980 is its top-mounted camera and SLAM sensor that enable it to navigate more effectively than other Roombas, even in tight spaces like hallways and corners. iRobot calls this technology iAdapt 2.0 and it uses images from the camera to draw an internal map. This feature was not the most advanced or the largest that we tested, however it was effective and a welcome feature. The 980 can also be controlled by voice commands via Alexa or Google Assistant. It can take several minutes to complete an order.

The Roomba 980 is also able to automatically return to its base station after it's finished with its cleaning task, ensuring it's always ready for the next adventure. This feature is exclusive to the 980, making the robot more user-friendly.

3. iRobot 985

iRobot Roomba 985 was designed by iRobot to help you make your floors cleaner and more attractive, thanks to its powerful cleaning, smart navigation, and intelligent integration with other iRobot products. Its patented dirt detection system alerts you to areas that require extra attention, and it comes with smart sensors to keep it away from steps and other potentially dangerous obstacles. It also automatically recharges and continues cleaning until the task is complete. Its intelligent mapping and vSLAM technology lets it explore the entire floor of your home, keeping an eye on the areas it's been to and what rooms are left to clean.

Its low-profile design allows it to get under carpets, furniture and other objects, where pet hair and dust are usually hidden. Unlike many robot vacuums, it is also able to clean up dirt in corners and along edges. You can schedule cleaning sessions by using the iRobot App or by using your voice, with Alexa and Google Assistant.

The iRobot Roomba 985 is powered by lithium-ion batteries of best quality. They charge faster and last longer than other brands. The battery is backed by a 12-month warranty and guaranteed to function under normal operating conditions. The high-impact ABS and Polycarbonate plastic construction gives it strength. Its resistance welded gold contacts and long-lasting circuitry ensures long-term reliability.

4. iRobot Roomba 990

The latest iRobot robot offers the best obstacle avoidance of any Roomba we've tested because of its front-facing camera and laser sensor. This allows it to stay clear of wires and pet feces much better than other robotic vacuums that we've reviewed, like the EcovacsN8Pro, Roborock S6MaxV, and others.

It's also iRobot's strongest vacuum, capable of taking on dirt with more granular debris and larger pet hair, unlike other mid-range models such as the Roomba 960. This is due to the cleaner's wider counter-rotating brushes as well as a more powerful motor with more suction power.

The Roomba 995 is also iRobot's least expensive vacuum with recharge and resume, but it doesn't come with the auto-empty system that both the I6+ and I7 offer. It lacks iAdapt navigation 2.0 and the camera utilized by the I7 to identify objects and avoid obstacles. This means it can't save maps or use in-app containment features like no-go zones.

The iRobot doesn't have mopping capability. This may not be an issue if you're looking for a top-quality vacuum, but it is a major drawback for anyone considering buying a hybrid robot.

It also has a bigger dust bin than the I6+ and I7 which can hold 2.5 liters of debris which is enough to last for 60 days.

5. Roomba 960 from iRobot

A more affordable alternative to the 980, the 960 offers similar performance but in a smaller. It is great for floors that are carpeted or bare, picking up food crumbs and tracked-in dirt. It's also excellent at navigating and avoiding obstructions. It is capable of removing dirt embedded in the soil.

This robot makes use of iAdapt 2.0 navigation to keep track of its location which allows it to navigate around efficiently and avoid getting stuck. It can see the floor as well as its obstacles and objects by using SLAM and a top-mounted camera. It can even be placed under couches and tables because of its low-profile. It's also able to return to its dock for recharging whenever it's needed.
