With a name like Asia one would think that the group would be prog kings and queens - but it's actually a fairly straightforward rock group. The band started out as a quartet and released two albums - 1979's self titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a wide musical background, but their greatest success was in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster, however it did not come without its own set of issues. The record companies put the band under pressure to deliver the top single or else they would pull them. Luckily for Toto they did and they did it with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery owes a lot to their prior experience, as the band members had been session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts before starting the group. Their distinctive sound has become the norm for '80s pop, influencing many modern artists.

The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write great AOR songs that slowly work their hooks into your mind. But the album also contains some slower, more jazzy tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distortion AOR and should sound completely wrong, but actually is incredibly effective.

After Toto IV the band's fortunes began to wane. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band had to go through several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band after drug charges. The band remained with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It wasn't as well-liked as IV. The group managed to release a chart-topping album, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album was the last of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.
