Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet format of the previous albums. It was a more ferocious, constant effort with a harder edge than Hydra. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. Bobby Kimball's growing proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard skills were also sharper, more complex and less akin to earlier efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live concert in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album just a few months after and embarked on a world tour support the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. It was completed in the form of a double-album called Then And Now in 2001. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe case of laryngitis that limited his singing abilities. Downes and the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially restructuring the band.
