Since 2000 the majority of Citroen cars and vans are equipped with transponder chips (chip) embedded in the remote or key. This kind of key has to be programmed into the vehicle with an instrument for diagnostics. This process is very quick and easy to do provided the proper tools are available.

The Citroen range is a very well-known range of vehicles which includes the C2, C3, C4, C5, C6 and the Xsara. Each of these vehicles has transponder chips inside the key blades which allow them to start the car when the correct PIN code is recognized by the vehicle when the key is put in, then it will respond with an immobiliser code, and the engine will start. This is referred to as a "chip key" and is extremely secure.
If you have lost one of these keys, it is generally easy to find a replacement from your local auto locksmith. The only issue is that since 1998, the Citroen vehicles were equipped with a distinct type of chip (known as a 'fiat' type 33) which is more complicated to replace in these instances. In these cases it is often necessary to perform a procedure called 'eeprom work to extract the key information from the ECU and immobiliser to program an entirely new key.
