You might expect a band with a name like Asia to be a prog rock band however it's actually a fairly straight forward rock group. The band has a varied musical background, but their greatest success was in 1982 with Toto IV.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career and the band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the group in the aftermath of drug-related charges. However, the band continued as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It wasn't as popular as IV. However, the group had a successful chart-topping album in 1992, Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the conclusion of the original Toto lineup and was also the first album featuring a new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet style of the previous albums. It was a more powerful, consistent effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased proficiency was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was sharper, more intricate and less cloned previously recorded efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live performance that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. A new studio album followed shortly after, and the group went on a long-distance tour in support of it. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old demo tapes and tapes to make a new album featuring songs that were never recorded before. The album was released in 2001 and released as a double album titled Then & Now. It was the first album in the band's history not to include a single song with the word "A" in its title and it included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe case of laryngitis that limited his singing abilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of reforming the band. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was busy with Yes at the time) was eventually referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had a guest appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
