Albums

The discography of the American rock band Toto includes 13 studio albums, four live albums, and a number of compilations. Toto has released original music as well as collaborated with other artists on soundtracks and films. Toto has won numerous Grammy Awards.

Before Toto was formed the members of the group did session work for other musicians. David Paich, the son of drummer Marty Paich, and Jeff Porcaro (the brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro and drummer Jeff Porcaro) all performed on Boz Scaggsalbum in 1975 Silk Degrees. Toto was formed in 1976 in the wake of the collaboration.

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked an abrupt departure from the progressive sound of their earlier albums, and was criticised for the lack of hit singles. In 1985 the group's lead singer Fergie Frederiksen quit the group, and the group held auditions for the new frontman. Guitarist Steve Lukather was chosen, and the band recorded the 1986 album Fahrenheit.

In 1998, Toto celebrated its 20th anniversary by going through several old demos and tapes to release a special album called Toto XX. The album was well-loved by fans and the band embarked upon the tour with former members Bobby Kimball Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams.

Shem von Schröck took over Leland Sklar as drummer on the tour for the 40 Trips Around the Sun album. In 2017, Toto released the double-CD set Falling in Between. It included recordings from the tour and also an interview with the group.

Toto has produced a number of music videos. The band has also released several compilation videos and DVDs. The most watched video by the band is "Africa" which has over one billion views on YouTube. The video is set in a library where the band performs on top of a stack of African books.

The track "Africa" is from the album Toto IV. It was written by band members and produced by David Paich. It was a huge success in Europe and many other countries. The success of the single helped Toto regain their popularity after their previous album, Turn Back, failed to chart in the United States.


Following the release of the album, Toto went on a world tour. The group included touring musicians Lenny Castro, Shannon Forrest, Warren Ham and Shem von Schroeck. Steve Lukather also released his second solo record, Luke.

In 1985, Fergie Frederiksen, Toto's drummer, quit Toto due to personal reasons. Toto decided to hold an audition, and eventually chose Joseph Williams to replace Frederiksen.

Before and during the time of Toto's creation the members of the group worked as session musicians for a diverse variety of artists. Drummer Jeff Porcaro and bassist David Hungate performed on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs which led to the band's formation. Keyboardist Paich was regular on albums by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.

In 1998, Toto began working on an album called Old Is New. This album included three new tracks as well as several finished recordings of songs from the past. The album became a huge success and the band toured on tour to promote it.

Toto is famous for their hit single "Africa" The group recently joined forces to promote their upcoming album, All In. The album came out on November 6, 2018, and included three brand new tracks from the forthcoming 40 Trips Around the Sun, and also completed recordings of four other older tracks that featured Jeff Porcaro on drums and either Mike or Steve Porcaro on bass. The album also featured a cover of Weezer's song "Hash Pipe" that the band decided to include after hearing a rendition on the radio.
