Ten Kids Beds Bunk-Related Stumbling Blocks You Should Never Share On Twitter Kids Beds Bunk

Bunk beds can add drama to kids' rooms and provide an excitement. Ms. Keenan adds a shelf to store books or a reading lamp in each sleeping nook to make bunk beds more appealing to children.

Many of our beds for kids bunk are convertible to two twin beds in one which is ideal if you intend to have your children move into their own bedrooms in the near future. Choose from bunk beds for kids like brushed gray, creamy white and rich walnut.

Ladders or Stairs

When you are choosing a bunk bed for your kids, you have the option to choose between ladders or stairs. Ladders are easy to install and are also less expensive. They also offer an easy way to get into the top bunk bed. They are also considered safer than stairs, since they have a larger area for children to step on and have a built-in handrail. Ladders often have grooves in the steps to prevent slips when climbing up and down the bed.

However, if you prefer the look and design of stairs, they could be a more elegant option to your bunk bed. Staircases are also suitable for rooms that are limited on space since they don't protrude into the room as ladders do. They are usually constructed of metal or wood and can be a great match for the various styles of bedrooms. Some staircases come with storage drawers which can be an excellent way to expand the size of a bunk bed.

When choosing between a ladder and stairs take into account the age of your child. While it is recommended that no one sleeps on the top bunk below the age of 6, children who are comfortable climbing vertically may be better off with stairs instead of a ladder. Also, if you're planning on using your bunk bed as guest beds for smaller children or adults with limited mobility stairs are the best choice.

A straight staircase on the sides of the bunk requires at least 95" of space on each side. If you don't have this much room, you can opt for a u-shaped staircase that doesn't need as much space but still provides a safe and secure method of getting to the top bunk. Certain beds let you remove the stairs when they are not in use. This reduces the size of the bed and makes it more suited to multi-purpose spaces. You can also find stairs that connect to the end of the bed and eliminate the requirement for a separate handrail, and makes it easier for children to climb up and down.

Guard Rails

Guard rails give children the confidence and freedom to climb in and out of bed on their own. They must be set in a proper way to ensure that there are no gaps or loosening in between the guardrails and the frame of the bed. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines when installing guard rails, and ensure that you inspect them on a regular basis to ensure they are not loose or have holes that could cause entrapment.

Keep bunk beds away from electrical appliances and other items that could become projectiles when your children are playing or sleeping. Also be sure to position bunks away from windows, which can be a danger to fall if kids get up on the top floor.

You might want to put a nightlight on the ladder so that it can illuminate the steps up and down when your child awakes at night to use the bathroom, or if they are awakened by a storm to leave their bedroom.

A safety net can be installed on top of the bunk to stop children from falling out while they are sleeping or playing. This is especially a good idea for older kids, who may be more likely to sleep in the top bunk.

The guardrails must be securely attached to the bunk beds. They cannot be removed without tools. The openings in the guardrails that are above the mattress foundation must not be more than 3.5 inches to avoid strangulation and entrapment. To test this, place the wedge block as shown in Figure 1 into each opening in the lower edge of the highest member of the guardrail and above the mattress's underside foundation. Then apply a 33-lbf (147-N) force in a direction that is perpendicular to the plane of the large end of the block and sustain it for 1 minute.

It is a good idea to tell your children not to hang any objects on the guardrail or ladder for example, belts, clothing, and sporting equipment. Instead you should make use of a rack for clothes to stop these objects from becoming a strangulation risk for your child. Also, ensure that more than one kid should not sleep on the top of the bunk, as this can create an imbalance that could cause falling.

Mattresses

Be aware of the age of your child and their size when choosing a mattress for bunk beds. A bunk mattress should last for at least eight years or until the children are no longer sharing the same bedroom. You'll want to select one that will grow with your child, but still provide enough comfort as they age.

There are a myriad of options for bunk mattress sizes. They are usually twin or full size. If your child suffers from allergies or asthma, opt for an allergy-free mattress with a dust mite barrier and a cover that wicks moisture. Kids tend to have a lot of accidents and spills, which is why mattresses with an antimicrobial layer will help keep the foam safe from harmful bacteria and germs.

The comfort of your mattress is crucial. Kids generally weigh less than adults, which means they require a mattress that feels firm but also comfortable. Many latex and hybrid mattresses come with an extra firm side as well as a soft side that can accommodate both children's requirements.

Memory foam mattresses are great for children, but we wouldn't recommend them because they tend not to cool well and can be a strain on the spines of small children. You should consider a hybrid or a latex mattress instead, which offer solid support with cooling infusions that will ensure your child or guest is resting cool and comfortable.

A mattress with a low profile is typically the best choice for kids bunk beds. These mattresses are designed to be thinner than standard mattresses, and to maximize the safety rail height of the top bunk. They also eliminate "filler" materials to offer top quality and slim designs.

If your child wants to try a mattress that's more hefty than a regular mattress, think about an hybrid or innerspring model with comfort layers on the top that can be removed or replaced as the child develops. These models will provide an idea of the durability of the mattress as your child grows. You can also add a mattress skirt or bed pad to stop it from sliding. Some mattresses have side rails or a lip built-in to prevent this.

Storage

Bunk beds can be an excellent way to make space in shared kids rooms. They also can be a cost-effective alternative to purchasing two separate full sized single beds. Some bunks offer the option of adding a trundle bed which can be hidden under the bunk that is not in use.

Consider installing a kids bedroom furniture set that has bookshelves, desks, or dressers to maximize storage space in a bedroom with bunk beds. This will allow you to keep all of your child's clothes, toys and personal items in one place instead of cramming everything in chests or closets that are overstuffed. These kids bedroom furniture sets are available from a range of retailers and typically meet all federal safety standards.

Stacked bunks can become a playground for the imagination as children can transform the spaces beneath into cozy hidden play areas and hideaway spaces. Designer Elizabeth Georgantas stacked six bunks to create the ultimate kids space. It can be used to sleep, play or even for superhero cape twirling. The room is decorated with bubble walls covered with Chasing Paper and a ceiling painted in Benjamin Moore Blue Jean to create the ultimate getaway.

If you're unable to construct an entryway to your bunk beds, a ladder is a good alternative. They are constructed using a combination of Single Socket Tee, Flange and 90 Degree Side Outlet Tee fittings and can be easily adjusted to increase or decrease the distance between ladder rungs to make it easier for children to climb. The ladder rungs are also set flush with the ground, rather than above to facilitate climbing.

Another method to maximize space in a room that has bunk beds is by installing loft kids beds that can be moved down to just above the floor. This allows you to slide desks, dressers or toy chests underneath the beds that are elevated. This is a true way to maximize space and can be a great option for small bedrooms or even in a huge family home where beds have to be able to accommodate many sleepers.
