Modern key fobs allow us to open doors, trunks, and tailgates without the need for a car key. Some key fobs even have an inbuilt key that can be used to start our cars. However, these fobs depend on a small battery that powers their remote functions. If the battery dies, then the key fob will not be able to transmit the signal needed to start the vehicle. Fortunately, there are many ways you can fix a dead key fob and get your car functioning again.
First, you must determine if the key fob is dead. If it appears dead, you will need to replace the batteries. You can do this yourself by taking the key fob away from its clip or using a small flat head screwdriver to pry it apart. You should not apply too much force or you could damage the fob. It's also important to be sure that you replace the correct battery type. Most key fobs use three-volt CR2032 batteries, however certain models may require a different type. If you're not sure which type your car requires it is possible to find the information in the owner's manual or visit an Interstate All Battery Center to get a professional to assist you.
If the key fob isn't dead, you can sometimes revive it by bringing it closer to your vehicle. The majority of key fobs employ RFID (radio frequency identification) which operates within a narrow distance. The ignition system has to be able to detect the signal. You can unlock your car or even start it by moving a few inches closer.
Many car manufacturers include backup mechanisms that is activated when the key fob battery is dead. For instance, the majority of Ford models have a separate slot for the key fob that will activate the engine when it is properly inserted. Go through the owner's manual to find information on where to find the slot and how to insert the key fob. If you are unable to start your car using this method, make sure to call roadside assistance for assistance.

The key fob's internal chip is what communicates with your vehicle's immobilizer system to begin the engine. This chip can be damaged or there might be programming errors. If this occurs, your key fob won't be able transmit the correct identification code, and your car won't start. In certain instances the problem with a defective transponder key could also be caused by physical damage or wear and tear on the key shell or contact pads.
Usually, when the key fob begins to have trouble communicating with the immobilizer system of your vehicle there will be specific warning indicators on the dashboard. These could include error messages, a flashing light or the key not locking or unlocking the vehicle. Broken Key Loop
One of my MK5 keyfobs has snapped off the small key ring loop at the top of the loop where it joins the keyfob. It's made of plastic or metal that is soft. I've done a hole in the wall and then wet-sanded it to make it more durable. But I suspect that's not helping.
I've also wrapped the broken part of the ring in clear tape, but it doesn't seem to do much good. It's really a shame because I use the rings to keep my keys on the mini-split ring which holds the larger split ring for the other keyfobs.
If the key fob's case is damaged, you could usually open it and replace the battery if it isn't dead. There are online kits available for this, but they generally only offer a temporary fix - it is more efficient to take it to a mechanic who will replace the battery and reprogram the key fob. You can also find a new case at an a locksmith or home improvement stores. They are not likely to cost as much as the new key fob.
