Two more of the pieces that will be included in the exhibition are a reference 1563 rattrapante chronograph once owned by none other than Duke Ellington himself, and a world-time clock in a domed cloisonné enamel case, with Gen Z Retro Hacks the eight-day movement modified to make it a world-timer by the great Louis Cottier, the watchmaker who is considered the inventor of the modern world-time complication. Let's look at the Duke's watch first.The in-house Calibre 2460 R31L/2 features a retrograde date (moving clockwise across the top half of the dial before jumping back to the first day of the month after 31 or whenever you set it) and a hyper-accurate moon phase accurate to 122 years before needing a one-day correction.In the three years since that first release, Furlan Marri has come into its own. In steel, it's cute. In gold, it's full-on bold. But there's something undeniably attractive about the sparse dial, and marriage of black against the gold case. This watch speaks for itself – and I think it'll be every bit as big a hit as last year's color palette of Musts was.
After Charles L. Tiffany, the watch was owned by Louis Comfort Tiffany, whose oldest daughter married Professor Graham Lusk, a prominent physiologist and nutritionist, in 1899. (One of their sons, William T. Lust, was with Tiffany & Co. from 1925 onward, becoming President in 1955). Additionally, in his musings on lighting, composition, and the importance of a primary subject, I began to see some of the principles that he would later adapt and apply to his watch designs, an understanding which only deepened my appreciation of his pieces.
