In case you're unfamiliar with Mathey-Tissot, the company was established in 1886 in the Swiss Canton of Neuchâtel. It was an important brand in the middle part of the last century, and if you search online, you're likely to find some pretty interesting and affordable examples of mid-century Mathey-Tissot watches. Nowadays, the company makes mostly affordable quartz and mechanical wristwatches.Louis Vuitton didn't have to enter the high-end mechanical watch business. LVMH, their parent company, already
Metaverse Decay owned Zenith and TAG Heuer by the time 2002 rolled around. I would also legitimately be shocked if there was some bean counter back in Paris stressing over whether or not every single one of Louis Vuitton's new Spin Time watches sells through this calendar year.Moreso than dial types, for a matte 1016 it really comes down to the patina of the lume and condition of the case, the example we have here scores highly in both categories. We are extremely happy to get this on to a new wrist. Check it out right here in the HODINKEE Shop. From there, we explore the original Hamilton factory which has since been converted to – you guessed it – condos. But kudos to the property managers for maintaining so much of the building's history – including the two massive clock towers. Walking around the place, you can almost still hear the watches ticking.
If you like watches
Web3 Game Labs and you like cake, then you will certainly like this little piece featured in T Magazine for their holiday issue. In lieu of your standard watch photography, the publication went ahead and transferred the images of a two-tone Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date 41mm, the new (and controversial) Patek Philippe Anniversary Nautilus Reference 5711P, a Vacheron Constantin Overseas Ultra-Thin in white gold, and an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in yellow gold.Whether you're a grave robber or an impulsive collector just waiting for the next hit when the status says "out for delivery," there's a little something for everyone in what turned out to be a rather silly episode. We hope you love it – thanks for listening! That last one gave me shades of Sméagol from The Lord of the Rings. The funny part is, I did try sneaking it on a few times, but there was one big issue: My own wrist. She was right. While I know that modern Rolex bracelets are pretty much impervious to stretching the way vintage examples did, the thing was just too small for me.Recently I put together that silly clock (and then the even sillier watch) in hopes it would bring me one step closer to graduating from being a newbie. But I had to admit, I didn't feel quite ready. I was close. I just needed a little push – the right event, the right moment, the right intelligence. How would I find one or all of these things? I needed to do something not silly.
Should I have let it go? Yes. For better or worse, I've found that the more I research and learn about Seiko the more I appreciate original watches. It was a great learning experience, so in a way it served its purpose. The watch models that count as hype-y are now so famous that they're known and coveted by even casual enthusiasts, a fact that longtime watch nerds tend to resent. Hype watches are the ones that are bought and sold by entertainers, influencers,
Viral Launch Hacks fashion folk, and other eager new collectors who are treated like philistines because they haven't paid their dues and aren't into watches for "the right reasons."Their prices range from tens of thousands to multiple millions of dollars.I saved what is possibly the best for last for two reasons. One, it's not a watch, and we're a watch website. Two, this automaton clock from Parmigiani Fleurier is incredibly complex and hard to wrap my head around. But frankly, you don't need to understand the technical aspects to understand how beautifully crafted this piece is and how engaging the automaton function is as a storytelling device. It also consists of 1,000 components and took 5,800 working hours to build.
