There's a lot to be said for a well-executed basic watch. With its latest, Eterna is offering up just that. The Granges 1856 is a straightforward time-and-date watch with a few classic dial options and a few little details that you might not notice at first glance to keep things interesting. This is just the sort of watch that would make a great daily go-to for a lot of people. Let's take a closer look. While there's nothing out there in a combination of high-tech materials with a super minimalist look priced around $2,850, there are quite a few watches with a decidedly modern, pared-back sensibility in the $2,000 to $3,000 range. So that's where we're going to look. While many companies would have pivoted towards the increasing (and threatening) popularity of quartz technology, then Managing Director of Audemars Piguet George Golay had a different idea. Just as when he helped to introduce the Royal Oak in 1972, Golay was looking to make a big bet. Enter the 2120/2800, the world's thinnest automatic perpetual calendar falsi bvlgari orologi movement. The first thing I noticed is that it comes across as a classic Divers Sixty-Five in basically every way. Where previous iterations in the line tended to skew a bit more towards vintage-inspired – by way of gilt accents and retro numerals – this one feels old school in a much more refined way. Similar to how a Rolex Submariner from the early 2000s harkens back to the 1950s but still feels contemporary.Caliber: 2967 (Offshore), 4407 (Concept) Functions: Flying tourbillon, flyback chronograph, hours, minutes (Offshore), Flyback chronograph, split-seconds chronograph, GMT 24h, hours, minutes, small seconds and large date (Concept)Diameter: 33.6 mm (Offshore), 32 mm (Concept)Thickness: 8.4 mm (Offshore), 8.92mm (Concept)Power Reserve: 65h (Offshore), 70h (Concept)Winding: Automatic (Both)Frequency: 21,600vph (Offshore), 28,800vph (Concept)Jewels: 40 (Offshore), 73 (Concept)
Killy (Jean-Claude): The famed French alpine billig panerai Uhr skier won three gold medals when his home country hosted the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble. Killy, who has appeared in numerous Rolex advertisements, won the downhill, the giant slalom, and the slalom. Though his name isn't associated with Olympic timing per se, it is forever linked to some highly collectible Rolex calendar chronograph watches. The first time I visited Crown & Caliber's workshops, I remember thinking "If people could only see all that we do here – no one would ever buy a pre-owned watch anywhere else." When Toby, our CEO, visited shortly thereafter, he said the exact same thing. The thoroughness, care, and attention to detail is something to truly admire – and in the seven months since that announcement, we've thought carefully about how to place our own take on an already incredible business. This model is powered by Tudor's in-house and COSC-certified Caliber MT5400. The movement offers a robust 70-hour power reserve, allowing the watch to function smoothly over a weekend without needing to be wound. The watch is water-resistant to 200 meters (660 feet), making it suitable for diving activities.I'm a fan of Urwerk. They're the best example of pure hyper-futuristic high-end watchmaking on the market today, in my humble opinion. Despite wanting to be a vintage guy at heart, I look at Urwerks releases and just think, "Maybe that's more my speed." I don't want to front-run myself, however. I hope to go hands-on with the watch in a few weeks when I head to Geneva. So until then – as the aviators say – keep the blue side up.
The unprepossessing little fellow you see here is a leafhopper nymph, and in its posterior was something science was late to discover and which no one was expecting: a system of organic gears, presumably to better enable it to leaf-hop.  This small-seeming but scientifically fascinating story is one worth meditating on, especially for those replique patek philippe montres of you who are interested in automata.  Apparently life really does imitate (mechanical) art.  Story here.In 1993, IWC returned with another, even grander grand complication called Il Destriero Scafusia (Italian for “the war horse from Schaffhausen”). It had a split-second chronograph, minute repeater, perpetual calendar, moon-phase, tourbillon, and more, a total of 21 complications. Priced at $350,000, it was limited to 125 pieces. The watch had 750 parts.Brand: Richard MilleModel: RM 33-02 AutomaticDiameter: 41.7mmThickness: 8.8mmCase Material: Rose gold, carbon fiberDial Color: Titanium and carbonIndexes: Oversized, luminousLume: Super-LumiNovaWater Resistance: 30 metersStrap/Bracelet: Rubber strapAn excellent example is the presence, on the dials of many watches, of numbers cut off to some extent by the presence of a subdial or subdials. The most common examples are the cut-off number six which you often seen in time-only watches with a seconds subdial, although you can also see cut-off numbers in chronograph watches as well.Auction previews for the "Important Modern and Vintage Timepieces" Geneva Auction will take place November 5 - 7, while the auction itself will be held on November 8. You excitedly get the bracelet sized so that the fun can really begin. You only acquire the watch once, so this is undoubtedly the briefest of the stages.
