Appropriate pool maintenance is necessary to have it serve you for longer duration. It is required for safety as well as to prevent any adverse impact on your health caused by inappropriate chemical levels and bacteria growth. Though professional help is available in the form of outsourcing agencies that are exclusively specialising in such services, a simple list of do's and don'ts will help.

The Do's

Buy a good quality test kit, which can test PH (which is a measure of the activity of the hydrogen ion (H+). Water with a pH < 7 is acidic and with a pH > 7 is considered basic.), total alkalinity, calcium hardness and sanitizer level. Buy one that includes a cyan uric acid test and tells you what type and quantity of products are needed to balance the water. This is the very basic requirement in pool maintenance.

• On a daily basis, remove all debris, pool toys, and other out of place elements, clean the strainer baskets, and check the pump parts.

• On a weekly basis, vacuum your pool completely, scrub the walls and the floor and test your pool water to avoid algae growth. Chemical balance is crucial in pool maintenance. Carry out pool water testing if you have complaints of red or burning eyes, if you see algae or if you have an unpleasant odour, heavy down pour, more than usual visitors.

• If you have a heater check for calcium buildup to wipe them out with acid using a proper wire brushes.

The Don'ts

• Do not mix various types and grades of chlorine

• Do not allow any petroleum products or acids to come in contact with chlorine.

• Do not drain the pool without appropriate directions and care as otherwise the pool's structure might crack on account of hydrostatic or ground pressure outside the pool.

• Do not add in one part of the pool all of the shock products to avoid damage to the gel-coat surface.

• Do not use abrasive cleaners, steel wool, metal scrapers, brushes or tools for wiping off the "bathtub" ring which forms on the pool wall or tile caused by body oils, suntan lotions and air borne contaminants as these can easily be removed with swimming pool tile cleaner or other non abrasive commercial tile or vinyl cleaners. Abrasive cleaners may cause permanent damage to the gel coat finish.

• Do not build your pool where is there are lot of trees and plants around. It is not always that your pool is the cause of any problem. What is near and around your pool, sometimes even if they are at a distance, may give rise to issues. Examples are trees and plants. What they shed may get into the pool and may even cause damage to the filters and other such pool equipments.

Add-Ons

Pool maintenance should include up gradation with add ons to make the swimming pool a pleasurable experience. Some examples in lighting are, pool lighting, solar garden lighting, LED pool lighting system, flush mount chrome lights, fibre optic perimeter and feature lighting.

You may consider adding a lap pool, a spa (including a portable hydrotherapy spa), a shallow beach area, some water features, feature walls. You may consider setting up automatic water top up systems, counter current units, swim jets etc

In your initiatives in pool maintenance, you may think of bringing in some life and colour to your pool. This can be achieved with the addition of swirling slides and splash pads with 12 jets. Diving Boards in many styles, floaties, giant pool noodles and inflatable islands are the further additions worthwhile considering.
