Writing good essays in Mains exam is not rocket science nor does it need rich vocabulary. I scored 158 on my essay exam. Based on this and my mentoring students for the exam, I can comment on what worked for me and common mistakes I came across. Writing a good essay is an art and not a mechanical process.
A real life analogy would be that of making tea. All of us know that there are only 4 main ingredients that go into it : Water, Milk, Tea Leaves and Sugar. However, the result vary drastically and in Hindi refer to it as : haathon mein jadoo hona !
There are few essential steps that must be followed for writing a good essay:
Good Reading Habits: The more diverse your reading list is the better content you will be able to generate in the essay. Connectivity: One must have the knack of connecting ideas from different domains. For example a topic on technology can use contents from Ancient History, Mythology, Medical Science, Ethics, Philosophy etc. Writing Practice: No matter how many tips, editorials etc you read, unless you do practice your skills will not improve. Initially the quality of essays would be terrible but with time it will start improving. The best way to practice is to join a test series (viz. Vision IAS) and get feedback on your essay writing.
