Ordinarily there can be a lot of data in a photograph, so to reduce the size of digital files, some of the information is discarded (hence “lossy”) based on certain algorithms that make the file smaller. In addition, there is metadata associated with the image, with information about when the image was taken, what camera was used, how the thumbnail should look, and even the location where it was captured.
