Markert's intensive study came about following the 2011 naming of the NSU terrorist suspects, and the murder trial that began in 2013; the victims included nine civilians of Turkish and Greek heritage (most of whom ran small neighbourhood businesses, though the Bavarian State Police insisted for years that they were involved with immigrant crime gangs), and a German policewoman.
