In addition to the film, the Lilo and Stitch franchise spawned a television series, short films, animated featurettes, several video games, theme park attractions, and other merchandise. The franchise’s success, a rarity for Disney during its post-Renaissance decline in the early 2000s, was a major boon to the studio and led to the establishment of an expansive new division of its animation department.

The story revolves around Lilo Pelekai, an orphaned Hawaiian girl being cared for by her older sister Nani and a community of relatives. Nani lets Lilo adopt a dog from a shelter, only to find an extraterrestrial runaway disguised as a dog: Stitch. The film explores the concept of ohana, with Lilo and Stitch becoming part of Nani’s family along with her brother David, Dr. Jumba Jookiba, Agent Pleakley, and others.

While the film lacks the technical brilliance of Disney’s previous efforts, it makes up for it with an imaginative story and a genuine affection for Hawaii. It also demonstrates the value of teamwork, with many scenes depicting Nani and Stitch working together to save their home and then rebuild it after it is destroyed.

The film also showcases Hawaiian culture, with scenes depicting surfing and luaus, traditional music, and sunburned tourists. Its depiction of Lilo and Stitch’s love and admiration for one another is also a heartwarming aspect, as is Nani’s willingness to let her lonely sibling have the pet she wants. Later spin-off material—the Japanese anime Stitch! and the Chinese animated series Stitch & Ai—emphasize Stitch instead of focusing on Lilo, with him moving in with other families (including that of Yuna, a karate-practicing tomboyish Japanese girl).
