Alexander Ljung, CEO of music streaming service SoundCloud, told the Wall Street Journal that an ad-free version will launch in the first half of 2015. SoundCloud revealed its subscription plans in August. after starting to run ads for all your users.

The guaranteed subscription service is part of a licensing agreement with Warner Music Group, the newspaper revealed. SoundCloud will pay royalties to Warner and its publishing division whenever a user plays one of its songs in both ad-free and ad-free versions. Warner will have some equity in the company.

In return, SoundCloud will be able to host Warner's music on its website without fear of removal requests or legal consequences. Previous reports suggest SoundCloud is looking to do something similar with other labels.

It's unclear what the subscription service will look like, but it's been suggested that it will be different from on-demand services like Spotify and Rdio. SoundCloud is best known for its unknown artists, popular song remixes, and previously unreleased material by established artists. And Warner doesn't even need to license its entire catalog. Why is this problem? As Bloomberg Businessweek suggests, it's a bit odd that brands have given SoundCloud so little pressure when it comes to their business models, considering how aggressive they are at attacking other services.
