Cage never phones in a performance, but saddled with thin scripts and B-movie direction, his methods of working stand out too much, and his intensity feels misplaced and mere fodder for parody and memes. A better vessel for this slightly self-parodically Unhinged Cage, however, has been horror, a genre he has only turned to recently, but which has seen him acclaimed for turns in Mom and Dad (2017), Mandy (2017) and Color Out of Space (2019).
