The series doesn't alter the facts of the real-life crime. In 1984, Brenda Lafferty and her 15-month-old daughter were killed in their house in a suburb of Salt Lake City, Utah. Unlike the book, which tells us at the start who committed the murders, the series follows Pyre and his fictional partner, Bill Taba (Gil Birmingham), through the investigation, with all its clues and false starts.
