Acne scars are a reminder of past breakouts and, for many people, a source of self-consciousness. Fortunately, there are noninvasive cosmetic procedures that can decrease the appearance of scarring. Acne scar treatment should be done under the care of an experienced dermatologist, like New York City-based Dr. Michele Green, who has over two and a half decades of experience treating patients from around the world with advanced rejuvenation techniques.

Over-the-counter creams and serums may slightly fade acne scarring but will not remove it. The most effective treatments are those that target the underlying causes of the scars, and this means controlling breakouts to prevent future damage.

Most acne scarring is caused by clogged pores that become inflamed and produce excess sebum, a natural oil that helps skin stay moisturized. When the pore gets blocked with dead skin cells and sebum, bacteria grow in the pore and cause infection that results in inflammation. This is what causes the red, indented marks that are most commonly seen on the face, neck and chest that we know as acne.

Some types of acne scarring can be treated with resurfacing treatments that remove layers of skin to promote healing. These include ablative and non-ablative lasers, chemical peels, microdermabrasion and radiofrequency treatments. Resurfacing is best for treating flat or nearly flat (atrophic) scars.

Other treatments can help lift and flatten raised (hypertrophic) or keloid scars, including corticosteroid injections. These are often administered in a series with each injection helping to flatten the scar and reduce its size. Other treatments for hypertrophic scars include a type of filler that is injected into the scar to lift it, and a surgical technique called subcision in which a doctor breaks up fibrous bands that form under the scar. acne scar treatment
