Acne scars are a reminder of past breakouts and, for many people, a source of self-consciousness. Fortunately, there are noninvasive cosmetic procedures that can decrease the appearance of scarring. When the pore gets blocked with dead skin cells and sebum, bacteria grow in the pore and cause infection that results in inflammation. Some types of acne scarring can be treated with resurfacing treatments that remove layers of skin to promote healing. These include ablative and non-ablative lasers, chemical peels, microdermabrasion and radiofrequency treatments. Resurfacing is best for treating flat or nearly flat (atrophic) scars.

Other treatments can help lift and flatten raised (hypertrophic) or keloid scars, including corticosteroid injections. These are often administered in a series with each injection helping to flatten the scar and reduce its size.
