The traditional way to cook this beloved/despised dessert is to boil it for up to eight hours – a task that would use around 7.2kWh of electricity on my electric hob if it was on half power. With this in mind, and the fact that I don't really fancy manning a pan for an entire working day, I am going to cook mine in a slow-cooker instead. This method will only use roughly 0.95kWh, so it's over 7.5 times more energy-efficient. Secondly, I'm using a vegan recipe – a twist that almost always lowers the carbon footprint of a dish.
