Dd has a good friend whose parents are of the 'girls don't need college and not much high school' variety (girl has pretty much said exactly this to dd). Girl is 15 (sophomore age), and says she's doing 'prealgebra'. Girl's spelling and grammar is atrocious and she doesn't seem to have much knowledge of history or the wider world. They seem to use AO LifePacs (as they are on the shelf), but I don't think she gets much of any direct instruction - 6 kids, mom works part-time. Girl is not academically self-motivated.

Anyway, she says her big plan is to go to beauty school. But I could swear I've read here more than once that those are some of the toughest to get into with a homeschool diploma or GED - worse than colleges. Am I remembering correctly? I looked up local beauty schools online, but unlike colleges there is no info at all about prerequisites like an accredited diploma. I feel like she should at least have a heads-up as to what she needs to do if this is what she wants - maybe it could motivate her (and/or parents) to check some boxes??? Or figure something else out before she's 18 and blindsided?

My daughter is graduating from high school soon. She hasn't decided where to go to school yet. She's very good at makeup. Where could her skills be directed?

Working in a spa, I got bored with the monotony of everyday life. I wanted career growth, an opportunity to unlock my creative potential. I went to study at an accredited beauty school with flexible hours to learn on the job and get practical application of the knowledge gained. Now I have become an esthetician and am mastering manicure and hairdressing. I hope to become a professional with a capital letter, make a name for myself, have regular clients, and develop in the cosmetology business.
