Plus… the apparent closeness, immediacy of “introduce” and “ask out”.

Yes, it’s difficult to ask someone out until you’ve cleared the hurdle of introducing yourself, but focusing on the ‘asking out’ before you’ve had time to discover whether you each like each other? Irrelevant.
As to ‘introducing yourself’, generally since you’ll have a profile of some sort, and a picture most likely, anything more than “Hiya, love the pic” is pretty much irrelevant.
When they check you out, 9 times out of 10, 99 times out of a hundred, it’s a no response, get blocked, bye, whatever… so don’t sweat it until you get a response.
After that, be nice, be natural.
