The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday that fungal outbreak Drug-resistant "superbugs" are spreading among patients in hospitals and long-term care facilities in Texas and Washington, D.C.

The Candida auris fungus preys on people with weakened immune systems, the slot168 CDC said, the evidence suggests. that these cases are related to person-to-person transmission. This will be a first for the US.

Groups in the two cities appeared to be unrelated, the report said. The 30-day deaths in the two outbreaks combined were 30 percent, although other health conditions may play a role as well.

Candida auris, first seen in the United States in 2013, is "resistant to many of the antifungal medications we have. It is also resistant to everything we use to kill bacteria and fungi in hospitals,” Internal Medicine specialist Neeta Ogden told CBS News in 2019 after health officials issued a warning about the impending threat.

Of the 101 fungal cases identified in Washington, D.C., from January to April 2021, three were isolated due to resistance to all three main classes of antifungal drugs. Such cases occur at long-term care facilities for the critically ill patients.
