Muir was fascinated with these qualities, and their bearing on the human spirit. So too were the pioneering photographers Eadweard Muybridge and Ansel Adams, both of whom made their names taking haunting photos of Yosemite, through which the PCT passes; often mysterious images which are precisely reminiscent of Japanese ink landscape paintings. Adams was directly influenced by Muir’s evangelical outdoor zeal.
