Friday Night Funkin' is a rhythm game in which the player controls Boyfriend, a character who must defeat a series of opponents in order to continue dating his significant other, Girlfriend. The player must complete a series of levels known as "weeks," each of which contains three songs. Each week, the player faces a new opponent, though some games deviate from this by including multiple opponents. During gameplay, the opponent will sing a series of notes (represented by arrows), which the player must then mimic by using the arrow keys or the W, A, S, and D keys. Some songs introduce more complex patterns, with the player's pattern occasionally differing from the opponent's or both singers performing a duet.
Each week, the player can choose one of three difficulties: Easy, Normal, or Hard. As the difficulty increases, so does the speed of the incoming arrows, and the arrow patterns become more complex. The player's high score for each week on each difficulty is tracked and displayed in the upper right hand corner of the week selection screen. The game has two modes of play: a story campaign in which songs are played linearly and a "free play" mode in which any of the game's music tracks can be chosen at random. Friday night funkin unblocked online game is a free rhythm game to play.

Ninjamuffin99 assembled a small team of Newgrounds creators to create an early Friday Night Funkin' prototype for submission to Ludum Dare 47 in October 2020, which contained only a few music tracks and lacked menus. Despite its crude design, the prototype was a huge success, prompting numerous requests for a full game. In response, Ninjamuffin99 stated that he intends to expand the game.
Ninjamuffin99 would later update this demo on November 1, 2020, adding several new menus and options, as well as "Week 2," a new fight. The game's popularity grew quickly on Newgrounds after it received significant attention on platforms such as YouTube, Twitter, TikTok, and Twitch. Its soundtrack, composed by Kawai Sprite, is available for free on Bandcamp and Spotify.
Ninjamuffin99 requested that his game be ported to the Nintendo Switch in February 2021. However, his request was denied, which he assumed was due to the game being incomplete.
Week 7 was released on Newgrounds as a timed exclusive.
Because of the increased traffic, Newgrounds crashed and was unavailable for several days. Following Week 7, the game's weekly update ended, with the developers instead focusing on the full game, titled Friday Night Funkin': The Full Ass Game.
