The inbounder must be tall enough to see over a defender basketball legends who could be guarding the ball, have good court vision to assess the defense and find a teammate getting loose, and maintain composure until the referee counts down to four and a half seconds. The inbounder must also have a good sense of time; ideally, the offense would never have to use a time-out because they couldn't get the ball into play in the five-second period, but if that's not possible, the inbounder must be able to ask the official for time before committing a time violation.
