Item upgrades can be used to improve the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type, it may boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity and boost additional stats.

Item Level

The level of an item is a widely used measure of power, and can be seen on all tooltips for items. It is also used to determine a gating condition when waiting for dungeons, scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear (since PvP is limited to an lower level). The average level of the item can be found on the character sheet.

When deciding to purchase or sell equipment, players can compare the levels of the item. It's an indicator of the damage and quality. Comparing items from the inventory of a seller is possible using the item level.

On your PC, you can view the item level by pressing ALT or using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the item's full description, including the ilvl. It can also be located by hovering over an item using the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are many theories about the method by which the level of an item is calculated. One theory says that the item level is calculated by formulas that determine how valuable an item's stats actually are. It takes into consideration the fact that various perks have different value and that gems in sockets increase the value of the item overall. This can result in a calculated amount for the item's ilvl, which is usually quite close to Blizzard's real level of the item.

However, this is not the only factor which determines the ilvl of an item, as the level of the area the item is dropped into can alter the value of its stats, for example by adding an amount to its haste rating or crit rating. This means that items dropped at higher levels will have more the ilvl than items from lower level instances.

Item Stats

Item stats can be the difference between a good or bad item for players. The game utilizes them in various ways to encourage players not to limit themselves to a single weapon, and to encourage them to try out other weapons. The stat mods of an weapon increase the base stats. These stat mods are then enhanced by a player's skill.

Item upgrades add to that by boosting certain stats on the item. The cost of upgrades is determined by the rarity of the item. For example, a grey or white item can only be upgraded once, whereas an item with rare tiers will be upgraded several times, at higher costs.

Another method to alter the stats on an item is by affixing it. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player and they come in all shapes and sizes. The affixes can be used to give the item additional damage, or add a unique capability to the item (such as reviving dead or cutting down cooldowns), or make the item unique by adding an exclusive name to the item.

All affixes are re-rolled at the moment by selecting them in the upgrade window, and pressing the green button. This procedure will cost the player a specific amount of gold and other items which can be added to the upgrade gauge in the same manner as the other options for rerolling.

Players can choose to upgrade an item by a specific stat, or reroll attaches. The range of stats is determined by the item's level. However, all items will include at least one stat in that range unless they are a unique item or the item is a God Roll from a boss in a raid.

This is another thing that could be altered by introducing an option to upgrade the equipment without rerolling the affixes or deciding which stats to boost. As with the base equipment, this will have to be done per item and the item comparison interface will not show all possible stats simultaneously.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player boosts the chance of finding items, the properties that are spawned by loot and the intensity of these properties. It doesn't, however, directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players a chance to acquire better gear in earlier waves, and is therefore more beneficial in early game runs as opposed to later ones, because most players value higher weapon scaling and defenses over the raw damage gain.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the probability of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance that increases with each level of the item and can be further enhanced by using an anti-material, such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons can be created or spawned by using the Luck property, which has the default value of 40. These items can be improved with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on their material type) to increase the value of 40 luck or to boost the Luck of an item up to 140.

Certain items, such as the Hollow-infused weapon, can also be equipped to increase the damage dealt by any skill that is able to deal damage by 5percent. These items can be purchased from the shop or constructed using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Item upgrades are costly and not every upgrade will be successful. However, there are item upgrader that allow players to increase their chance of success or stop themselves from losing an item if the upgrade fails.


The success rate of an upgrade can be seen in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of successfully upgrading the item and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations to how much the success rates can be improved and the chance of a failed upgrade cannot exceed 100%..

The performance of an upgrade is also affected by the Luck of that item. Each item has an overall success rate of 25 percent, and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by five percent.

The item upgrade overlays are displayed above items in the inventory. This can cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
