We know this because we live and breathe vintage watches, and we ourselves have experienced all this all too many times. It's hard for me to get the compromise version of the thing I really want.That said, I have to admit that I never really warmed up to the dial design and coloring of this blue/red take on the classic Rolex-derived Pepsi colorway. I'm not sure if the complicated dial texture is a move toward the Grand Seiko aesthetic, but that, combined with the orange of the GMT hand, didn't manage to wow me in the metal.Given that the innovations on this launch are largely aesthetic rather than functional, I suppose the phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies, and could be aptly revised to "if it ain't broke, add some 18k yellow gold, why don't ya?"
The best way to proceed if you want to be sure of authenticity, is to either buy it from the original owner with supporting photos, or check whether it was tracked in the repair ledger, a copy of which is provided with this Submariner Snowflake. Both back and front – that METAS-certified MT5602-IU is almost as nicely turned out on the back, as the watch is topside – it's got all the sable seductiveness of an SR-71 Blackbird. The 770 is a serious movement – it has a Gyrolab balance, a solid gold winding rotor, and obviously that deadbeat seconds complication. It's decorated nicely and looks every bit the part a piece of fine watchmaking. To me, the Geophysic True Second has always been a real thinking man's watch. It's a little tough to understand at first glance and it packs a ton of technical interest into something simple, wearable, and handsome. Consider me a fake montblanc watches fan.I met a number of people at the auction who I still talk to regularly today, some colleagues and some close friends. The movie is set between 1979 and 1981, a time when Rolex divers were known for their jangly bracelets, aluminum bezels, and matte dials. These are the watches we see today with bezels that have gone full-faded ghost, lume plots turned to a creamy color, and bracelets stretched from years of use and abuse. They're also sized in the sweet-spot 40mm range.Two of the four references come in 18-carat yellow and the remaining two in white gold; there are two Royal Oak models (in 37 + 41) and two Royal Oak Offshore models (both 42mm). Rather interestingly, this is the first time that the same design has been developed for both collections simultaneously. Despite the use of an octagon and screws in both, Royal Oaks and Offshores tend to have quite a different feel so this is certainly a unique vantage point design-wise for AP and Williams.
